Map of Civic Area

At the heart of our downtown, we’re rethinking urban park design for a strong connection to nature while cultivating recreation, community gathering, food and more. We launched the Civic Area Phase 2 project with initial community engagement starting in February of 2024. For a full report of Engagement Window 1 and what we heard from the community, click this link.

In the spring of this year, we asked the community to share their vision for the Civic Area. We heard the community most wants to:

  • Attend programmed events and activities
  • Gather with friends and family
  • Connect with nature through outdoor recreation and green space
  • Feel a sense of welcoming, inclusivity, multicultural celebration, and holistic storytelling
  • Eat, dine, and picnic
  • Enhance and expand the Farmers Market
  • Interact with art
  • Address illegal and unsocial behaviors throughout the park.

Additional thoughts on safety in the Civic Area:

Community members expressed frustration around illegal and unsocial behaviors in the area that make them feel unsafe. The Civic Area Phase 2 project is a part of a multi-year and multi-departmental effort to create a more safe and healthy Boulder through collaboration with our:

  • Operations teams
  • Safe and Managed Spaces team
  • Boulder Police department
  • Housing and Human Services department
  • Boulder County

Now we're asking for your input on design ideas showing how the Civic Area could look in the future. Please take our questionnaire to give your feedback, or attend our virtual open house on Nov. 1 at 5 pm.

Your input will help shape Boulder's downtown civic space into one that will serve the entire community for many years to come. For more detailed project information, please visit our project page.
